Custom Wavefront Guided Laser Eye Surgery
Custom Wavefront Guided Laser Eye Surgery, including Custom LASIK, Custom PRK, Custom LASEK and Custom Epi-LASIK, are alternative Laser Eye Surgery procedures that offer patients with extremely complex eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions the opportunity to obtain a more precise outcome in visual results.
Your eyes are a sophisticated optical system. There are various optical components that together, contribute to the total optical performance of your eyes. As with any optical component, the cornea and crystalline of your eye may have distortions that we call aberrations. The most common aberrations of the eye are myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. These aberrations are called ‘low order’ aberrations as they can readily be corrected with the relatively simple lens prescriptions provided by eyeglasses and contact lenses. However, there are some aberrations that cannot be corrected with typical eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions because they are too complex. These aberrations have names like spherical aberration, coma, trefoil, tetrafoil and secondary astigmatism. Because these aberrations require a much more complex optical correction, they are called “high order” aberrations.
Until 2001, our clinical ability to understand high order aberrations was limited by the lack of clinical instruments that allowed us to measure them in a general eye care office. Today, using an instrument called and aberrometer, we are actually able to measure these high order aberrations and relate them to any visual symptoms or complaints about your vision. If these high order aberrations are significant and eliminating them would further enhance your visual results, then Drs. Albergo and Austin may recommend using a Custom Wavefront Laser Eye Surgery procedure to obtain the best results.
During your LASIK Consultation at Connecticut Eye Center with Drs. Albergo and Austin, considerable time will be spent discussing the goals you have and the specific things that you wish to achieve by having LASIK surgery. In addition, you will have a thorough eye examination including careful measurement of your refraction, a microscopic examination to the evaluate the condition and health of your cornea, a digital mapping of the shape of the cornea and a full examination of the health of your retina and optic nerve. From your consultation, Drs. Albergo and Austin will be able to
determine whether you are a candidate for any type of Laser Eye Surgery, and which procedure-LASIK, Custom LASIK, or another type of LASIK surgery is required to help you meet your vision correction goals.
